The Metaverse refers to a variety of shared spaces and assets that people can access via the Internet - sometimes using virtual reality and augmented reality devices – to interact with each other and experience and/or buy virtual goods.
According to research in the UK, at the current level of technological consumption, the average American will spend up to 44 years of his or her life staring at a screen. Advertisers are racing to benefit from this new environment, whether it means people exploring virtual worlds, engaging in gaming, or buying NFTs using crypto currencies, and an increasing number of companies are considering how to best engage in this novel environment.

Meet the European Med-Tech Companies Attending FIME 2022
Tuesday July 26, 2022 I 6.00 PM - 8.00 PM I Miami Beach

Twenty European companies, selected by the European Innovation Council (EIC), will be attending the Florida International Medical Exhibition (FIME) at the Miami Beach Convention Center on July 27-29 as part of the EIC's overseas trade fairs program. These SMEs, startups and scale ups from across Europe will be showcasing their innovations, ranging from hospital equipment, medical disposable products, nursing care and diagnostic tools to dental equipment, products for rehabilitation and electro-medical devices at the European Pavillion during the fair.
EACC Florida Members will be offered the opportunity to meet with these companies at an Invitation-Only Reception hosted by the EIC on Tuesday July 26. There will also be B2B match-making opportunities.

EU - Spring 2022 Economic Forecast: Russian Invasion Tests EU Economic Resilience. The outlook for the EU economy before the outbreak of the war was for a prolonged and robust expansion. But Russia's invasion of Ukraine has posed new challenges, just as the Union had recovered from the economic impacts of the pandemic. By exerting further upward pressures on commodity prices, causing renewed supply disruptions and increasing uncertainty, the war is exacerbating pre-existing headwinds to growth, which were previously expected to subside. This has led the European Commission to revise the EU's growth outlook downwards, and the forecast for inflation upwards. Read more.
EU I European Defense Fund: €1 billion to Boost the EU's Defense Capabilities and New Tools for Defense Innovation. The EDF is the Commission's flagship instrument to support defence cooperation in Europe. Without substituting Member States' efforts, it promotes cooperation between companies of all sizes and research actors throughout the EU. Read more.
EU I Ukraine: Addressing Ukraine's Financing Gap and Reconstruction. In addition to existing support, the Commission envisages to propose granting Ukraine in 2022 macro-financial assistance in the form of loans of up to €9 billion, to be complemented by support from other bilateral and multilateral international partners, including the G7. EU I Customs Union - New Tool Tool for Digital Customs Cooperation and Trade Facilitation Coming Soon. The EU "Single Window" initiative forms part of an ambitious project to moderniZe customs controls over the coming decade. Plans aim to further facilitate trade, improve safety and compliance checks, support the digital and green transitions, and reduce the administrative burden for national authorities and companies. EU - New Rules on Cybersecurity of Network and Information Systems. Once adopted, the Directive on measures for a high common level of cybersecurity across the Union (NIS 2 Directive) will cover providers of public electronic communications services, digital services, waste water and waste management, manufacturing of critical products, postal and courier services and public administration, both at central and regional level as well as the healthcare sector. EU - US I Declaration for the Future of the Internet. The European Union, the United States, and several international partners have proposed a Declaration for the Future of the Internet, setting out the vision and principles of a trusted Internet. Partners support a future for the Internet that is open, free, global, interoperable, reliable and secure and affirm their commitment to protecting and respecting human rights online and across the digital world. EU - US I Second Meeting of the EU-US Trade & Technology Council. Issues discussed at the second second Ministerial Meeting of the TTC in Paris included: support to Ukraine; information integrity; trade and labor dialogue; export controls; secure supply chains; technology standards; AI; platform governance; SME access to technology; environmental and climate aspects of trade and technology; and trade barriers. EU - US I TTC Releases High-Level Guidelines on Cybersecurity for SMEs. The Trans-Atlantic Trade & Technology Council released Cybersecurity High-Level Guidelines for SMEs providing tips to become more cyber secure as well as links to relevant resources and initiatives on both sides of the Atlantic. US - EU I Joint Statement between the European Commission and the United States on European Energy Security. The European Commission and the United States understand the urgency of taking decisive action to reduce energy imports from Russia. Together, we are partnering to address these challenges under our joint Task Force on Energy Security announced by Presidents Biden and von der Leyen on March 25. Read more.
US I SEC Nearly Doubles Size of Enforcement’s Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit. The expanded Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit will leverage the agency’s expertise to ensure investors are protected in the crypto markets, with a focus on investigating securities law violations related to: crypto asset offerings; crypto asset exchanges; crypto asset lending and staking products; decentralized finance ("DeFi") platforms; non-fungible tokens ("NFTs"); and stablecoins.
EU - Caribbean I MDB Heads Explore Attracting Private Sector Financing for Sustainable Development in the Caribbean. Heads of four leading Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) - including the European Investment Bank - discussed how to secure the extensive financing required to meet Sustainable Development Goals and the role of the private sector in the development finance landscape. USCIS Increases Automatic Extension Period of Employment Authorization Documents. On Tuesday, May 3, 2022, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a Temporary Final Rule (TFR) that increases the automatic extension period for certain Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) for up to 540 days. The increase will take effect on May 4, 2022. This rule was issued to help avoid gaps in employment for noncitizens with pending EAD renewal applications and stabilize the continuity of operations for U.S. employers. Read more.

US Antitrust Division Announces Shift in Enforcement Strategy to Reinvigorate Enforcement of US Antitrust Laws. In a recent speech, U.S. Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter highlighted his five policy initiatives for reinvigorating enforcement of U.S. antitrust laws. Marking a significant shift in antitrust philosophy and enforcement strategy, Kanter’s language appears to more closely adopt the approach the EU espouses, focusing on competition as opposed to simply approving mergers and conduct that will result in lower prices or increased efficiencies. Alexia Planos – Daughter of Cuban Immigrants with a Spanish Twist

Alexia turns 23 in August 2022. She was born and raised in Miami, has a sister who is 2 years older and comes from a family of Cuban immigrants. When still a child, her father moved from Cuba to Madrid with his parents where he acquired Spanish citizenship. He lived in Mexico and Brazil before going to college in the US and eventually settling down in Miami. Her mother was born and raised in Miami. Alexia has dual US and Spanish citizenship and has on several occasions returned to Spain – namely Asturias and Galicia - to visit relatives and friends.
Alexia graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Honors College of Florida International University in 2020, receiving a B.B.A. in International Business and Marketing. During her studies, Alexia worked with Madewell as a Sales Associate, BBC Studios in Coral Gables as a Market Research Intern, and studied abroad in Paris, France, Beijing, China, and Seoul, South Korea. Alexia currently attends Emory University College of Law and will be graduating with a JD in the Spring of 2024. She is currently back in Miami for the summer working as a Law Clerk at EPGD Business Law.
Alexia is passionate about languages: she is fluent in English and Spanish and studied French at the Cours de Civilisation Francaise de la Sorbonne in Paris in the Spring of 2020. She cut short her stay in France to return to the US a day before the borders were shut down. She also learned some Mandarin while studying in China. She plays the piano daily and loves to cook and watch films. She feeds her passion for food and cinema by managing an Instagram account called food.and.movies.with.Alexia.
