EACC Network Executive Directors Meeting in Amsterdam


An EACC all chapters Strategy Meeting will be held in Amsterdam on June 8 at the invitation of EACC Netherlands.


Will be in attendance: Yvonne Bendinger-Rothschild (EACC New York), Nicole Fenyo (EACC Cincinnati), Erin McKelvey (EACC Texas), Sandrine Perreault (EACC Lyon), Katherine Prewitt (EACC Paris), Fernanda Sieverling (EACC Carolinas) and Christina Sleszynska (EACC Florida).


The last EACC Network meeting was held in May 2018 in Cincinnati.

Transatlantic Perspectives


On May 9th, EACC Florida was delighted to welcome Colonel Guillaume de Sercey now retired from the French Foreign Legion, Carol Cabezas, former President of Azamara Cruises and Dr. Victor Lozinski, Co-Founder, CEO & Chairman of the Board of LeverX, for a high-level exchange on corporate leadership. The Conversation was moderated by Ashlee M. Wright, a founder, CEO and leader in the education sector. The event was hosted by President's Circle Member Greenberg Traurig.

 

After a keynote by Colonel de Sercey, the program considered different leadership and management styles and delved into the unique stories and learnings of our invited speakers.


Speakers and attendees lingered well after the end of the event around some very nice wine and a tasty cheese and charcuterie board.

Florida Well Represented at European Rail Event


Florida was well represented on May 16 at the European Railway Clusters Initiative’s (ERCI) final event of the S-ACCESS project.


This project aims to support the internationalization of European SMEs in the Rail supply industry with a focus on international public procurement and is coordinated by Brussels-based ERCI (a Member of EACC Florida).


Panelists included EACC Florida Executive Director Christina Sleszynska, Aileen Bouclé, Executive Director of the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization as well as experts from the EU Institutions, Canada, Norway and representatives of the European railway industry.


As part of her comments on what to consider when establishing operations in the US, Christina Sleszynska referenced a recent report titled Miami 2035 – A Miami that works for All and one of its key recommendations: to create a world-class multimodal public and private transportation system deeply integrated with housing.

Report: Miami 2035 - A Miami That Works for All


The report, A Miami That Works for All, provides research and analysis on the attributes of world-class metropolises, gauges Miami’s performance, identifies new opportunities, and puts forward a set of potential actions to ensure the region reaches its full potential. It is the first report by The Partnership for Miami which was founded to catalyze the leadership, creativity, and resources required to unlock inclusive growth over the coming decades. The underlying conviction is that through thoughtful collaboration with a range of stakeholders, a Miami can be created hat is prosperous and thriving for all its residents.

TRANSATLANTIC NEWS

EU I Spring 2024 Economic Forecast: A Gradual Expansion Amid High Geopolitical Risks. This Spring Forecast projects GDP growth in 2024 at 1.0% in the EU and 0.8% in the euro area. This is a slight uptick from the Winter 2024 interim Forecast for the EU, but unchanged for the euro area. EU GDP growth is forecast to improve to 1.6% in 2025, a downward revision of 0.1 pps. from winter. In the euro area, GDP growth in 2025 is projected to be slightly lower, at 1.4% - also marginally revised down. Importantly, almost all Member States are expected to return to growth in 2024. EU I Sustainable Electricity Grids. The European Commission has been tasked by the EU Member States to make proposals aiming to achieve a fully integrated, interconnected, and synchronised power system in Europe. Read more.


EU I Anti-money Laundering: New Rules Adopted. The new and stricter rules will strengthen the European systems in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing. A new agency based in Frankfurt will supervise the work of actors involved. The new rules will ensure that fraudsters, organised crime and terrorists will have no space left for legitimising their proceeds through the financial system. Amongst new entities impacted by these rules are the crypto-sector, traders of luxury goods and football clubs and agents. Read more.


EU I More than 27,000 Unitary Patents Registered in First Year of Operation. Over the first successful year of application of the Unitary Patent system, the European Patent Office (EPO) has registered over 27,000 unitary patents. Most patents are awarded for medical technology (31%), civil engineering (6%) and transport (5%). Currently 17 EU Member States participate in the Unitary Patent system with Romania joining soon. European Commission Establishes AI Office. The AI Office aims at enabling the future development, deployment and use of AI in a way that fosters societal and economic benefits and innovation, while mitigating risks. The Office will play a key role in the implementation of the AI Act, especially in relation to general-purpose AI models. It will also work to foster research and innovation in trustworthy AI and position the EU as a leader in international discussions. Read more.

US I Vision for the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Released. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) within the Department of Commerce launched the AISI, building on NIST’s long-standing work on AI. There are also plans to work with a global scientific network for AI safety through meaningful engagement with AI Safety Institutes and other government-backed scientific offices. Read more..


US I CHIPS for America Announces $285 million Funding Opportunity for a Digital Twin and Semiconductor CHIPS Manufacturing USA Institute. The Biden-Harris Administration issued a Notice of Funding seeking proposals from eligible applicants for activities to establish and operate a CHIPS Manufacturing USA institute focused on digital twins for the semiconductor industry. The CHIPS for America Program anticipates up to approximately $285 million for a first-of-its-kind institute focused on the development, validation, and use of digital twins for semiconductor manufacturing, advanced packaging, assembly, and test processes. U.S. I Additional Guidance to Boost American Clean Energy Manufacturing Released. The U.S. Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released additional guidance on the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) domestic content bonus, part of President Biden’s economic strategy to boost American manufacturing and iron and steel production, so American workers and companies can continue to build the clean energy economy. Read more.


EU - LatAm I EU and Honduras Celebrate the First Round of Bilateral Consultations. As regards bilateral affairs, participants took stock of political and economic relations between the EU and Honduras as well as of their cooperation. On the EU side, Mr. Pelayo Castro underlined that the EU - as one Honduras’ main cooperation partners - remains committed to support an inclusive and sustainable development in Honduras based on shared fundamental principles and values, such as democratic governance, the rule of law and human rights. EU - LatAm I EU Requests WTO Consultation on Colombia’s Compliance in Frozen Fries Dispute. the EU has launched compliance proceedings against the Republic of Colombia in view of its failure to comply with rulings by the WTO Panel and Appeal Arbitrators concerning anti-dumping duties on imports of frozen fries from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Florida State Sales Tax Rate on Most Commercial Leases Reduced to 2% Beginning June 1st. The 2% state-level tax rate only applies to leases of commercial property, such as retail, office, warehouse, and industrial properties. The tax rate on many short-term and other residential rentals (such as hotel or home rental stays) remains at 6% (plus the local sales tax and local tourist development tax). Read more.


US to Impose Further Tariffs on Imports from China Following Section 301 Review. The White House and the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced that U.S. tariffs on imports from China will remain in place and that certain new tariffs (see below) will be imposed. The EU AI Act: Part One – Scope and Prohibited Systems. The European Union recently enacted its new artificial intelligence regulation, the (“EU AI Act”). The new law is expected to have a substantial impact on the AI industry, including on companies outside of the EU, much as the GDPR did. Treasury Issues Game-Changing Final Regulations on Domestically Controlled REIT Status. The United States Department of Treasury issued final regulations (Final Regulations) that arguably change the test (DC Test) for determining whether a REIT is a domestically controlled qualified investment entity (DC-REIT). A REIT’s status as a DC-REIT matters to its foreign shareholders. If the REIT is a DC-REIT, those shareholders may sell shares of a REIT without being subject to U.S. income tax. Read more.
