Europe Accounts for 62% of all FDI Employment in Florida
|
|
According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, Florida ranks 5 th in the nation in terms of foreign direct investment employment, and 1st in the Southeastern U.S. with a total of 366,100 jobs supported by majority foreign-owned companies.” Most notably, majority foreign-owned companies from Europe account for the largest share BY FAR at 62 percent of all FDI employment in Florida. That represents 227,600 jobs with the UK, Germany, France and Switzerland in the top 5, and Ireland, the Netherlands and Italy in the top 10. Read more.

Official EU Mission to Miami on Resilience hosted by EACC Florida
March 1-3, 2022

On March 2 and 3, EACC Florida is hosting a delegation of EU officials in Miami for a series of specialized meetings on resilience, transportation and climate-related issues.
This is the first visit to Miami in this capacity of Mercedes Garcia Perez, Head of Global Issues and Innovation at the Delegation of the European Union in Washington DC, and of Gzim Ocakoglu, First Counselor on Mobility and Transport also at the Delegation of the EU.
The visit will include peer exchanges between the EU officials and representatives from Miami-Dade County’s Port Authorities, Office of Resilience, the City of Miami Beach, MDC’s International Trade Committee, and entities part of MDC’s Transportation System including the TPO, DTPW, FDOT and CITT. The two EU Representatives will also be meeting with Miami International Airport Authorities and airline representatives.
As part of their schedule, they will have an exchange of views with the European Consul Generals present in Miami on “Maritime Transport Decarbonization” at a meeting hosted by the Consul General of France in the framework of France’s Presidency of the European Union. They will also present to students at the University of Miami and will meet with some of the University’s leadership.
Last – but not least – the visiting EU officials will be offered the opportunity to meet and brief EACC Members and invited Friends at a special event on Wednesday March 2nd.

EU - Data Act: Measures for a Fair and Innovative Data Economy Proposed. As part of its Data Strategy, the Data Act will regulate who can use and access data generated in the EU across all economic sectors. Read more.
EU - Commission Publishes Analysis of Trade and Sustainable Development Policies around the World. The independent study, carried out by the London School of Economics, covers the EU, Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland and the US. It reveals that TSD implementation and enforcement vary significantly, for example when it comes to dispute settlement and the use of trade remedies in case of breaches of TSD provisions. Despite such differences, cooperation remains the watchword for TSD implementation, even for countries that rely on trade sanctions for TSD enforcement. Read more.
EU - Strategy to Promote Decent Work Worldwide with Focus on Forced Labor. The Commission's proposal sets out the internal and external policies the EU uses to implement decent work worldwide. The Strategy will include a new legislative instrument to ban products made by forced labor from entering the EU market. Read more.

EU-US Energy Council. Held on February 7 and 8 in Washington DC, the purpose of the meeting was to take forward EU-US cooperation on energy security and on the joint commitment to accelerate a just and clean energy transition to climate neutrality for citizens of the EU, the United States, and around the globe. Another shared objective is to secure the energy security of Ukraine and the progressive integration of Ukraine with the EU gas and electricity markets. Read more.
EU-US: Trade of Bivalve Molluscs Resumes. Starting at the end of February, trade of molluscan shellfish - such as mussels, clams, oysters and scallops – will resume between the EU and the USA. Two EU Member States (Spain and the Netherlands) will be allowed to export molluscan shellfish to the US, whilst two American states (Massachusetts and Washington) can do the same to the EU. EU-Mexico - Case on Measures Affecting Trade of “Tequila” Resolved. The European Commission formally ended its investigation under the EU’s Trade Barriers Regulation (TBR) concerning measures taken by Mexico relating to its exportation of “Tequila”, following the successful resolution of the issue. The complaint had been brought by Brewers of Europe who had argued that Mexico’s refusal to issue export certificates for “Tequila“ was WTO incompatible, causing significant economic damage to an EU company relying on “Tequila“ as an input. On Feb. 24, 2022, President Biden announced significant new export controls and sanctions against Russia in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The latest sanctions package comes on the heels of a first wave of U.S. sanctions announced over the past several days, and combines financial restrictions implemented by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and significant new export controls implemented by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS).
