The Future of Trade
How can Europe and the United States join forces to rewrite the post-COVID trade agenda
Thursday, March 4, 2021
Under the Biden administration, Americans and Europeans need to rebuild as close a transatlantic relationship as possible. Transatlantic partners may have different viewpoints on some specific trade issues. But both sides have much to gain by moving forward trade negotiations in many areas and intensifying the closest trade relationship there is between any two big markets in the world.
What is needed is no less than an ambitious trade agenda, for modernising the WTO so that it can be relevant to todays problems, for a new agenda for market access, securing a level playing field in the face of market-distorting subsidies by actors that follow a different economic and strategic philosophy than Europe and America, and for sectoral transatlantic agreements in areas like professional recognition of qualifications, freedom of Movement, and types of trade in services not covered by the WTOs essentially all trade requirement for agreements.
The COVID-19 crisis has ushered in a paradigm shift in our thinking about supply chains. Instead of efficiency, resilience is getting more important. This would be a great area of cooperation for transatlantic trading partners who know they can rely on each other when it comes to health supply chains and other critical products.
SPEAKERS:
- Pascal Lamy, President Emeritus, JACQUES DELORS INSTITUTE, Former Director-General, WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION (WTO)
- William Alan Reinsch, Senior Adviser and Scholl Chair in International Business, CENTER FOR STRATEGIC AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES (CSIS), Former President, NATIONAL FOREIGN TRADE COUNCIL
- Jonathan Hackenbroich, Policy Fellow, EUROPEAN COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS [Moderator]

How US Fund Managers Can Best Raise Capital from European Investors. European investor appetite for Cayman Islands and Delaware fund structures has been waning for more than a decade. However, the 2013 introduction of the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) was a game changer for the European Funds market. It imposed an EU-wide framework on hedge, private equity and real estate funds, with greater regulation and compliance requirements. The directive was also implemented to increase investor protection. Read more.

FCPA enforcement trends: What to expect in 2021 from Biden administration. Over the last two decades, U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) enforcement has steadily increased regardless of the political climate or administration in power. Financial and economic crises, such as the current conditions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, generally increase corruption. Given the new administration and economic backdrop, we expect that the incoming Biden administration will actively pursue enforcement of financial crimes, corporate fraud prosecutions, and increased regulatory oversight. Moses Kashem
Miami Native Italian-Bengali Organic Farmer
Founder of the Urban Vegetable Project and St. Simons Farm
|
Moses Kashem is a Millenial. A Miami native, he is the son of a Muslim Bengali father and a Catholic Italian mother who came to the United States as immigrants. He was planning to become a doctor but instead was inspired to devote his career to farming and obtained a Bachelor's of Science in Biology from Florida International University.
When still a student, he started attending St. Simons Episcopal Church in South Miami as a secular to get closer to a girl he liked, Erin. He eventually married her at that church with the entire congregation at their wedding. Moses speaks some Italian and returns to Italy as frequently as he can to visit the Italian side of his family and deepen his insights into farming in Italy.
One day, Moses had a crazy idea.
He wanted to turn the four unused acres surrounding the church into an urban organic farm incorporating culturally diversified methods into his agricultural practices. His vision was that it could provide income for the church, for him, and, eventually, fresh produce at local Miami grocery stores.
And it worked!
As demand from his CSA clients, local restaurants and Whole Foods Markets started increasing, Moses refurbished a 2,400-square-foot greenhouse at the Marien Center in North Miami so he could grow vegetables throughout South Floridas scorching summer. He has also expanded to Indiantown, FL, where he farms 80 acres of certified organic produce.
When he is not in the fields or delivering fresh produce to his loyal CSA clients, you can find Moses working on cars, welding, and boxing.
