EUROPE DAY CELEBRATION WITH THE
EU CONSULS
May 9, 2021 in Miami
|
|
EACC Florida's first post pandemic in-person event!
|
|
With some 60 guests in attendance, Europe Day 2021 organized by the Consul Generals of France and Germany in Miami in partnership with EACC Florida was a resounding success!
While a deluge was pouring over our Magic City on May 9th, not a drop of rain fell over the Residence de France. A wonderful turn-out of the European consular corps, local authorities, representatives from South Florida’s cultural and academic landscape, and many EACC Florida Members and Friends enjoyed the French and German food and wine offerings, live classical music and – for many – their first post-Pandemic in-person networking opportunity in the lovely gardens of the consular residence.
Thank You for Coming !

Expanding Operations into New Territories
Is there a “New Normal” and What Does it Look Like?
Wednesday June 30, 2021
Expanding operations into new territories around the world has traditionally offered important commercial opportunities for multinational corporations and SMEs alike. Whereas standardization, harmonization of practices and the impact of technology have supported and accelerated the trend toward globalization, the COVID-19 pandemic marked an abrupt halt, leading to a global recession, a severe disruption of global value-chains and a sharp decrease in foreign direct investments. While most governments have promptly acted in support their domestic economies, many are considering new rules affecting foreign investors.
This program will be looking at how those trends have evolved in particular in the US and Europe, what some of those new rules are and what specific changes to look out for in particular in areas such as governance and local vs. international complexity in financial transactions, accounting, taxation and human resources.
TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION
- Growth of more responsible Governance
- Trends in International vs. Local complexity
- What are the US Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2020 and Reform of the EU’s Anti-Money Laundering Framework and how will they impact transatlantic financial transactions and banking operations?
- What is the European Commission’s Proposal for Regulating Foreign Subsidies Control and how could it impact investments into Europe?
SPEAKERS
- Jan Willem van Drimmelen, Head of North America – TMF Group (Amsterdam)
- Edoardo Gambaro, Partner - Greenberg Traurig (Milano)
- Mike Morroni, Head of Global Client Directors and North America Head of Business Development – TMF Group (Miami) [Moderator]

EU - Global Approach to Research and Innovation. The EU adopted a new strategy built on two principal objectives. First, it aims for a research and innovation environment based on rules and values, and it is also open by default, to help researchers and innovators around the world work together in multilateral partnerships and find solutions to global challenges. Second, it aims to ensure reciprocity and a level-playing field in international cooperation in research and innovation. Read more.
EU I European Commission Proposes Regulation on Foreign Subsidies Control. To address concerns that subsidies granted by non-EU countries may cause distortions in the Internal Market and undermine the level playing field within the EU, the European Commission has proposed legislation to tackle foreign subsidies causing distortions in the European Union’s internal market. If adopted, the Proposal would significantly increase the regulatory burden on companies backed by non-EU States that are active in the EU internal market. Read more.
EU I European Commission Proposes New Business Tax Agenda. The upcoming proposals will include a new framework for business taxation in the EU, which will reduce administrative burdens, remove tax obstacles and create a more business-friendly environment in the Single Market; defines a tax agenda for the next two years, with measures that promote productive investment and entrepreneurship, better safeguard national revenues, and support the green and digital transitions; and a Recommendation on the domestic treatment of losses. EU I EU Improves Visa Information System (VIS). Under the new rules, the VIS will include information on short-stay visas as before, but also cover long-stay visas and residence permits, as these documents allow for free movement within the Schengen area. In addition, a scan of the biographical data page of the travel document will be included in the VIS. Read more.
EU I Court Judgments on the Amazon and Engie Tax State Aid Cases. The EU's General Court has confirmed the Commission's June 2018 decision that Luxembourg granted illegal State aid to Engie through selective tax breaks, but annulled the Commission's October 2017 decision that Luxembourg granted illegal State aid to Amazon. Both judgments confirm once more a key principle: while Member States have exclusive competence to determine their taxation laws, they must do so in respect of EU law, including State aid rules. Many companies will have to engage with remote or flexible working arrangements in the longer term. The European Commission Proposal for Regulating Foreign Subsidies Control. The European Commission proposed a Regulation to tackle foreign subsidies causing distortions in the European Union’s internal market (the Proposal). The Commission is concerned that subsidies granted by non-EU countries may cause distortions in the internal market and undermine the level playing field within the EU, especially when they are used to finance participation in public procurement tenders or acquisitions of undertakings. According to the Commission, whereas public support granted by EU Member States is subject to State aid rules, the current competition, trade, and public procurement rules do not address distortions caused by foreign subsidies. Therefore, undertakings benefitting from third-party subsidies enjoy a competitive advantage over those that cannot receive the same. Read more.

Lorenzo John
A Very Young Swiss-Mexican Voice from the Future
“Envisioning constructive citizenship and developing constitutions in imaginary countries”
|
Lorenzo will be turning 11 on June 3rd and is our first voice from Generation Alpha which is the first to be born entirely in the 21st century. His father is from St. Gall in Switzerland and his mother from Mexico City. His parents moved to Miami when he was 2.5 years old.
Lorenzo is finishing 5th grade in the International program – German at Sunset Elementary. He is fluent in English, Spanish and German. He is a very good student and received his school’s Academic Excellence Award for his perfect scores. Lorenzo loves to write short stories and together with his classmates is engaged in the planning of the yearbook with over 200 stories created during the pandemic!
Like most kids this age, Lorenzo is perfectly comfortable around computers and knows how to create websites to play and communicate with his friends. During the Pandemic, Lorenzo and his friends created LOREDMIT, and online game, which involves an imaginary country in which they can create the laws. The country of Loredmit was created from combining the Empire of Bunerz and the country of Fleringturn extending from Switzerland all the way to Greece. The official languages of Loredmit are English, French, Swiss and Russian and players can apply for Loredmit citizenship and to run one of its institutions:
Lorenzo loves geography, aviation, and technology. He is very engaged in plane mechanisms and controls and loves to play a video game called Airline Commander. Although still very young, Lorenzo already knows what he wants to do when he grows up: he would like to become a pilot and travel the world but with less pollution!
