Partner Event I Public Innovation Challenge: Propelling Waste Diversion Across Miami-Dade County

March 11 @ 8:00 AM - April 21 @ 11:59 PM EDT

Miami-Dade Innovation Authority (MDIA) has announced the launch of the fifth Public Innovation Challenge in collaboration with the Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) and the Office of Innovation and Economic Development (OIED), with support from the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).

Miami-Dade County produces over five million tons of waste annually. Moreover, according to Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) only 37 percent of the County’s waste is actually recycled with an approximately 39.9 percent contamination rate. Reducing waste in landfills will remain especially important as the County continues to grow.

This is not just a Miami-Dade County issue, but a national and global one. Miami-Dade County has an opportunity to act as a national leader in waste diversion strategies, while simultaneously creating a cleaner and more environmentally responsible community for its residents.

To that end, MDIA is seeking early-to-growth-stage technology start-ups offering solutions in the areas of waste diversion, organic waste reuse, and resident engagement and education.   MDIA will selects at least three (3) companies, each of which will receive $100,000 in funding along with the opportunity to test their solution at DSWM facilities, providing pathways for significant scale.
