On March 12 and in a Miami Dade College room packed with Members & Friends, students, faculty, activists and representatives from the local transatlantic business and international relations communities, EACC Florida was delighted to welcome European Union Deputy Ambassador to the United States, Michael Curtis, who offered the EU’s perspective on some of the key developments confronting the transatlantic relationship and world balance today.
In conversation with Miami Herald journalist Nora Gamez Torres, Michael Curtis discussed the following issues:
➤ the significance of trade in defining the transatlantic relationship;
➤ the formal EU-US Dialogue on China;
➤ an update on the Global Arrangement on Sustainable Steel and Aluminum;
➤ Ukraine, NATO and the possibility of a second Trump Presidency in the US;
➤ coordination between the EU and US to respond to the war in Gaza and the EU positions regarding response to the conflict;
➤ the new agenda for relations with Latin America and the Caribbean;
➤ an update on the EU-Mercosur trade agreement;
➤ the EU’s policy towards Cuba.
Michael Curtis answered questions from the floor about EU plans regarding its defense industry, the much-loved and highly successful Erasmus Mundus program, and the EU’s policy with regard to human trafficking.
As EACC Florida Executive Director Christina Sleszynska mentioned in her opening remarks, “welcoming the Deputy Ambassador today and hearing the EU perspective on these issues directly from the source and right here in Downtown Miami is not only a pleasure but also key because of the increasingly important role Miami is playing as a global business destination and key hub between Europe, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean.”
The public event was preceded by a small Green Room Reception during which invited Guests were offered the opportunity to exchange a few words with the Deputy Ambassador.
This was the Deputy Ambassador’s first official visit to Miami and on this occasion, EACC Florida was delighted to partner with The World Affairs Council Miami and Global Ties Miami and honored that the event was hosted at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus. Many thanks to WAC Miami President Aaron Rosen, Global Ties Miami Executive Director Athena Passera and Dr. Gonzalez, President, MDC Wolfson for their partnership and welcome.
